The world's entire orangutan population resides on the islands of Borneo and Sumatra. In approximately 200,000 orangutans inhabited those islands. The current estimates are for a population as low as 30,000. Destruction of the rainforest is the primary cause. With the major forest fires burning in Indonesia even more habitat is being destroyed.
