Dirty Bottled Drinking Water

A U.S. study, conducted by an environmental advocacy group, has found contaminants in leading brands of bottled drinking water. The study found that 10 brands detected bacteria and 38 chemicals including "coliform bacteria, caffeine, the pain reliever acetaminophen, fertilizer, solvents, plastic-making chemicals and the radioactive element strontium." MSN

The Washington based advocacy group tested bottled water from California, North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland and Delaware. Two brands, Sam's Choice sold by Wal-Mart and Acadia of Giant Food supermarkets, had "troubling" levels of contaminants in them. Chlorine byproducts known as trihalomethanes were found and have been strongly linked to cancer. Both companies refused to comment on the findings.

This study, along with others from the past, should be seen as a red flag to consumers. People have been convinced by clever marketing that bottle drinking water is safe, clean and healthier than water from the tap. This study clearly indicates that that is not the case. While bottled water companies are getting rich, people are unknowingly drinking toxins.

In our home, we do not used bottled water. Instead, we have a carbon filter on our tap.

I don't drink bottled water but even I was shocked when I saw some of the stuff in there. I really find the lack of regulation/oversight to be very disturbing.

If people want to reduce the impact on the environment how about stop buying bottled water. The sales of bottled water are almost as much as Soda pop/carbonated beverages.
All the plastic bottles left over fill up landfills and take forever to biodegrade.
How about just drink tap water and make less garbage.
