Earlier this week I read at Alternative Consumer that TreeHugger was working with Discovery and Grist on green TV programming. This morning, reports from the NY Post are saying Discovery bought TreeHugger for $10 million.
I hope this development is positive for promoting environmental issues and congrats to the TreeHugger group. Discovery will be able to reach a broader audience and they have credibility as a media outlet.

It will be interesting to see how this all shakes out. I have a feeling Treehugger may lose some of its original constituency. And Discovery will gain new viewers.
The upside is that Discovery could spread the word and make the environment a mainstream issue that can generate real action. The downside of big corporate involvement is the inevitable skepticism and potential to be profiting from trends. 10 million is probably not a lot of money to them so it is worth the gamble. Time will tell.
