The ultimate sacrifice

The feature in the January 2007 issue of National Geographic is deforestation in the Amazon (link will get you part of the article at the National Geographic website. One part of the feature that I found very disturbing was the story of Dorothy Stang. She was a 73-year-old American nun who was killed as part of her stance to stop the deforestation. The rate of deforestation is linked, in my opinion, to the global demand for goods produced by the cleared land. The battle between economics and environmental sustainability is being waged in the Amazon. If you get a chance to read the NG article it will be an eye opener.
