India and the Environment

India is the largest democracy in the world and a massive economy that is growing rapidly. With a lot of focus on China I wanted to take a look at India and see what kind of economic, environmental and social issues are going on. I think many people know about Bhopal and Union Carbide (Wiki) but there is much more going on. I hope to learn much more and provide some intelligent commentary on the situation. North America is rather insulated from news around the world in mainstream media. For other people who are interested I have found a site, India Together, that has an environment section. I don't anything about the site or who publishes it but it seems like a good place to start. If anyone has any other informational sites please let me know. I just did a quick search and found one that I liked. As I learn more I hope better posts will follow.

Hi...!

I found the title of your blog - "Living in a Toxic World" very appropriate...

Will try n give you some info on India..(where i Live..!:))...

All in All, we are REALLY Irritating & Hurting & 'Angering' "Gaia" ( as the scientist James Lovelock so elegantly put it..!)..!!

You can see similar sentiments echoed in one of my posts in http://trust-ur-intuition.blogspot.com/

Hi I came here from Blogger.Being featured in the blogs of note is something prestigious.Kudos!

Well,in about some 2 or 3 years India will become the second superpower nation next to China and that's something laudable.Yes, but the politicians here ruin the country. If not for the presence of politicians, India would have already been a superpower. As for the environment issues, there are many places that are dirty yes but the government is taking measures to do something about that but they are not strict.Implementing rules is one thing. But maintaining a strict vigil is the most important thing. Cameras should be fixed in all the street corners and sever punishment should be given to people who dont follow the rules. This is already in practice in many countries. If thsi is followed i can live in a cleaner and greener India.

yeS I AGREE WITH YOU and your outlook...
but to understand this tragic environmental condition of India..we first need to understand India itself . Its easy to blame the government and politicians..but are we really environmentally aware...?
u c...India still consists of a lot diversities..and its not a easy job to run a country with so many varying opinions..and environmental issues can only be dealt when we have a common motive behind it...

and the day when India becomes world's next economic leader...i see this a far fetched thought...
