FAA Approval Will Destroy Wetlands

Recently the Federal Aviation Administration approved the construction of a new airport near Panama City. According to two conservation organizations, the approval violated federal law and a suit has now been filed against the FAA by these two groups. The law states that the agency cannot approve an airport proposal that would cause "significant" environmental damage unless there are no "possible and prudent alternatives." An alternative does exist. There is an airport just thirty minutes away in Panama City.

The proposed area for the new facility would destroy nearly 2,000 acres of wetlands which are home to many endangered and threatened species. If this airport does get built, it is expected to cause massive development in the surrounding areas. This development would further destroy 7,000 acres of precious wetlands.
