Remember years ago when NATO bombed Serbia for a few months? Part of the "humanitarian" action included bombing a petrochemical facility that caused pollution to land, air and water. Now, citizens are protesting pollutants being released by some of these factories. The facilities were bombed but were not completely repaired and lack pollution control equipment. The environmental devastation of the attacks is still ongoing almost 8 years later. Who knows what other environmental damage occurred from this attack?
The attacks on Serbia were concentrated to a relatively short period by war standards. Imagine the devastation being caused by a prolonged military action like the current conflict in Iraq. Thanks to Globalization and the Environment for my original finding of the story.
